Michigan-based battalion loses another Marine
He's 10th to perish in 7 weeks in Iraq
November 21, 2006
A Marine from a Michigan-based reserve battalion was killed in combat Sunday in Iraq.
Lance Cpl. Jeremy S. Shock, 22, from Tiffin, Ohio, was a member of the 1st Battalion of the 24th Marines, headquartered at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township. Shock belonged to the battalion's weapons company, which is based in Perrysburg, Ohio. His death brings to 10 the number of Marines killed in his battalion in roughly seven weeks on the ground in Anbar province.
Although Shock was killed in combat, the Marine Corps would not say what caused his death, said spokesman Capt. Tyson W. Dunkelberger. Specifics like that can help insurgents fine-tune their methods, he said.
Shock was married, according to the Marine Corps, and was a machine gunner. He joined the Marine Corps in November 2004.
Funeral arrangements weren't available Monday evening.
The battalion's 700-some Marines from Michigan constitute the largest deployment of Michigan Marines since the war began in 2003.
The Free Press is chronicling the lives of 1/24 Marines during their scheduled seven months on the ground in Iraq. Staff writer Joe Swickard and staff photographer David P. Gilkey are embedded with the unit at Camp Baharia, near Fallujah.
