LCpl. Darrell Schumann

President Bush read the last letter of Marine Lance Cpl. Darrell J. Schumann of Hampton, VA on Monday at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Schumann was based in Hawaii but lived in Hampton with his parents when they moved here in the late 1990s. The 25-year-old heavy-machine-gunner was the son of retired Chief Master Sgts. Rich and Mary Schumann.

He was killed on Jan. 26 along with 30 other servicemen in an early morning helicopter crash in Iraq. There were no survivors when the Super Stallion helicopter went down during a sandstorm 220 miles west of Baghdad near the town of Rutbah. *
