LCpl. Hector Ramos
February 3, 2005
Friends and family said their final goodbyes to a young Marine from Aurora. Hector Ramos, 20 , was onboard a helicopter that crashed in Iraq last week, killing 31 people.Hundreds of people attended the funeral services for Marine Lance Corporal Ramos. The popular East Aurora High School graduate was remembered as an energetic, respectful young man who wished to serve his country after the 9/11 attacks.
"He had more light, more moving, more spirit he had in 20 years than most people do in 70 or 80 years. And hector believed that he was called to let his light shine," said Rev. David Engbarth, St. Nicholas Church
"Here is a 20 year-old man can make such an impact on people's lives, being a good role model for the rest of the community. I hope others will grow up to be like him," said Manuel Becker, Ramos' uncle.
Hector Ramos' mother, Nancy, was flanked on one side by the Marine recruiter who helped her son join and Hector's brother, Noah. Noah, who is wearing green, enlisted several months ago and is now finishing-up boot camp.
"It's difficult for him, but as he mentioned in the service, he's going to go on and dedicate everything to his brother," said Becker. "No second thoughts."
Jim Frasier did not know the Ramos family. But, he does know what they are going through. His son, Jacob, was killed by a Taliban gunman in Afghanistan in 2003.
"Now they're going through the ceremonial time. The Marine Corps gets 'em. The church gets 'em. But in about a week, that's when they get to grieve," said Frazier.
