Franklin Marine killed

A 21-year-old Marine from Franklin has died from a gunshot wound in Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon.

Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Nass died Saturday from "a non-hostile gunshot wound" at Camp Blessing, 20 miles from Pakistan, the military said Tuesday in a news release.

Nass was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division and III Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

His death remained under investigation, said Capt. Chris Perrine, a spokesman for Marine Corps Base Hawaii, the stateside home for Nass' unit.

Nass attended Franklin High School before joining the Marine Corps in January 2003.

Tom Thurin, who was Nass' U.S. history teacher at Franklin, described him as very quiet, very nice and very respectful while he was at the school, but said Nass had not been involved in any extra-curricular activities.

"He was a very happy person" after joining the Marines, Thurin said. "He really thrived on it."

Nass was stationed at the base in Hawaii in July 2003 and deployed to Afghanistan in June as a rifleman in the 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, Company E.

His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.

Nass is survived by his wife, whom the Marines did not identify.
