Marine killed while helping at crash on I-5 is identified

June 29, 2004

The Marine killed while helping victims of a traffic accident on Interstate 5 Saturday has been identified as Warrant Officer Edrick Moreno Carrero, 37, of Queens, N.Y., authorities said yesterday.

Carrero joined the Marines 18 years ago and was stationed at Camp Pendleton.

He was helping the driver of a Nissan Altima who had rear-ended a BMW at 5 a.m. Saturday near Via de la Valle.

Carrero had stopped his car, run over to the Altima and was leaning into the passenger window when a Dodge Neon crashed into the Altima's right side at 80 mph, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Barkley. The Altima had been sideways on the interstate.

Carrero was killed instantly. The impact split the Altima in half and threw its driver, a 36-year-old Escondido man, from the car. He suffered severe head and upper body injuries. He is expected to face charges of drunken driving, Barkley said.

The Neon's driver, an 18-year-old Vista woman, and two passengers suffered minor injuries, but a third passenger, a man age 36, suffered major head trauma and was placed on life support, Barkley said. The male passenger was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the BMW involved in the first crash was unhurt.
