Texas Marine Killed in Iraq

September 16, 2006)--Marine Lance Cpl. Ryan A. Miller, 19, of Pearland died Thursday during combat operations in Iraq’s volatile Al Anbar Province, military officials said Saturday.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, from Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

His parents, Jeannine Maughmer-Miller and Frank Miller, are both retired after long careers with Houston police.

Frank Miller worked in narcotics for more than 34 years, and Maughmer-Miller was a juvenile investigator for 25 years.

Ryan Miller had hoped to follow his parents into law enforcement.
Assistant Police Chief Vicki King, acting as a spokeswoman for the family, says that Ryan would have made a fine police officer.

Miller attended Pearland High School but finished his secondary education as a home-schooled student so he could enlist when he turned 18. He was barely a year removed from his Marine Corps graduation when he died.
