MARIETTA — A Marine from Marietta who was serving in Iraq was killed along with three other Marines that same day while fighting enemy forces.
Lance Cpl. Stephen F. Johnson, 20, died Sunday during combat operations in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, the military said.
Johnson was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Staff Sgt. Timothy Edwards, spokesman for the 2nd Marine Division, said Johnson joined the Marines in July 2005 and earned the rank of Lance Corporal in June.
Johnson graduated from Pope High School in 2005.
Marion Lister, Johnson’s homeroom teacher throughout high school, said the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks inspired Johnson to serve his country.
‘‘He was a very brave young man,’’ Lister said. ‘‘It’s tragic. He was very proud to wear his uniform. He talked to my freshman homeroom last year.’’
