Indianapolis native killed on Easter

A Marine born in Indianapolis was killed on Easter in Iraq.

"He was a real good kid -- he was a great young man," said Jerome S. Gray, father of Lance Cpl. Torrey L. Gray. On Monday, Gray learned that his son had been killed.

According to the Department of Defense, Gray, 19, was one of two Marines killed in a Sunday attack. Along with Cpl. Daniel R. Amaya, 22, Odessa, Texas, Gray was assigned to Lima Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment. Both were killed by hostile fire in Al Anbar Province.

Gray, who joined the Marines at age 17, had been promoted to lance corporal at the time of his death. Gray already had served a tour of duty in Iraq during the 2003 invasion and returned to the United States. He headed back to Iraq last week. His father said he arrived amid the fighting on Good Friday.

Torrey Gray was born in Indianapolis. When he was about 1 year old, his parents divorced and he moved with his mother to Illinois. Gray finished high school in Patoka, Ill., and joined the Marines as soon as he graduated. His father still lives in Indianapolis.

Marine Corps officials at Gray's base at Twentynine Palms, Calif., declined to release details of the incident. Marines have said they fear releasing such information could be used by the enemy.
