Marine killed in Iraq mourned as hero

POJOAQUE, N.M. (AP) - Mourners have paid their respects to a Reserve Marine from Pojoaque who was killed in Iraq.

Lance Corporal Jonathan Grant was remembered late Wednesday as a hometown hero who treated everyone with respect.

The head of the New Mexico National Guard, Brigadier General Kenny Montoya, says Grant made his mark in this world, and he’ll never be forgotten.

Montoya, along with Grant’s friends and family, were among 800 people who turned out at the Pojoaque Valley High School gym to remember Grant.

Grant was among four Reserve Marines who died May 11th when their amphibious assault vehicle was hit by a blast in Karabilah.  He was the 10th New Mexican killed in Iraq.

Grant will be buried in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
