N.C.-based Marine dies of war injuries

CAMP LEJEUNE - A North Carolina-based Marine died at a military hospital in Germany from combat wounds he suffered in Iraq, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Donald E. Champlin, 28, of Natchitoches, La., died Monday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center after being wounded Sunday in Anbar province. Champlin was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune.

He was the second member of the regiment whose death was announced this week. On Monday, the military said Cpl. David G. Weimortz, 28, of Irmo, S.C., had died Saturday.

As of Tuesday, at least 2,637 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war that started in March 2003, according to a count by The Associated Press.
